Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a new-comer on the World Watch List. The country is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. The population consists mostly of Muslims. Kyrgyzstan is a secular state, although Islam has a growing influence in politics and daily life. On January 12, 2009, Kyrgyzstan adopted a new religious law which increased restrictions on the activities of religious groups.

Since the introduction of this new law, the situation for churches in the country has become more difficult. Re-registration of all religious groups is needed and a minimum of 200 people is required for registration. There is an increasing level of threats and harassments towards believers. Meeting places can no longer be used officially, the police visits pastors and churches, and there is ban on religious teaching and the distribution of religious literature. Social pressure on Kyrgyz Christians is especially strong in the Southern region of the country.
